The general description of an addiction is a pattern of abuse that leads to significant detriment.  Whether that is gambling until you are at risk of losing your home or drinking until you are at risk of health complications.  One thing that is generally true of all addictions is that it causes major life problems for both the sufferer and those around them.

Addiction

The definition of alcohol and substance dependence includes a continuing need to increase the dosage of the substance in order to achieve intoxication and withdrawal if the substance is discontinued.
